In general, you open document and templatefiles the same way you do in other programs. When you open an InDesigntemplate, it opens as a new, untitled document by default. Documentfiles use the extension .indd, template files use the extension.indt, snippet files use the extension .idms, library files usethe extension .indl, interchange files use the extension .inx, markupfiles use the extension .idml, and book files use the extension.indb.

In this review I want to talk essentially about everything the Kickstarter stretch goals added these books as books, i.e., excluding the other types of rewards like tokens, cards, or music; and also, perhaps strangely, excluding the core game for the reasons stated earlier.

The two books are hefty but pleasant to the touch. The art varies mostly from good to gorgeous, and even the monochrome art such as the pieces created by Jan Pospisil for the original, smaller-scale project benefits from the rich greys and sepias you can get with full-colour printing.

Because the premise of DramaSystem is that the players are at the core of the action, the main characters in a continuing dramatic series, each pitch is created with this drama in mind to emulate the flavour of shows and books like Battlestar Galactica, A Game of Thrones, Firefly, NYPD Blues, or Lost. They offer hooks to create interesting characters, whether placed at the centre of power or skulking in the shadows. I love that the settings and genres represented are so varied.

My recommendation to game publishers for future Kickstarter stretch goals: I would place much more value on ebook format (such as .mobi or .ePub) than on special dice, bonus fiction, or even colour printing.

Whether you need to create your own marketing materials or you want to become more proficient with the tools you can use in your workflow, this book is an efficient path to mastering basic tasks in InDesign.

The design process can take anywhere from one day to a month, depending on your skill and experience, and your level of perfectionism. Take the time to get this right, so the book will have the best possibility of success. (I should probably repeat that 100 times!)

First, before you hire an illustrator, you need to decide on a trim size, the finished size of the book. This decision means you must know ahead where you plan to print the book, or else you must know standard trim sizes. Any non-standard size will cost much more to print and will cut into your profit. It\u2019s always better to stick with a standard trim size.

Though it varies widely, for novels, most self-publishers use 5\u201D x 8\u201D, 5.5\u201D x 8.5\u201D, or 6\u201D x 9\u201D. Popular sizes for picture books include 8.5\u201D x 8.5\u201D, 8\u201D x 8\u201D, and 8.5\u201D x 11\u201D.

Bleed - Printing can vary by hundreds of an inch and to prevent tiny white lines around the edges of a book, the printer requires that images extend beyond the borders of the book for about 0.125\u201D. This gives them some small allowance for variations. Check your printer\u2019s specs for the exact amount of bleed required.

300 dpi - One measure of the quality of an image is dpi or dots per inch. For print, the standard is 300 dpi. For the web/ebooks, the standard is 72 dpi. All photo formatting programs can change the 300dpi to 72 dpi without a loss of quality, but you can\u2019t go the opposite direction. If your images are 72 dpi, you can\u2019t change to 300 dpi, or the image will pixellate. Therefore, require all art at the highest dpi needed and convert as needed for the web/ebooks. (If you don\u2019t follow this discussion, you\u2019ll have to read elsewhere about image quality, as it\u2019s beyond the scope of this article.)

Layout refers to how the images are integrated with the text, and is an art-form. The illustrator should have allowed space for the text, or you may have planned to add colored boxes for text. All of the planning for the trim size, art direction, and integration with the text is referred to as the book\u2019s design. This is a vast topic, the subject of many books and courses. For a simple introduction to it, I recommend The Non-Designer\u2019s Design Book by Robin Williams. But know that you\u2019ll always be learning how to improve your layout and design.

For a novel, you\u2019ll worry about page numbers, page headers, and margins. For newbies, I highly recommend that you buy and use a template, such as those from BookDesignTemplates.com. They set up everything for you in either Word or Indesign. For a quick reference on industry standards for book layout, refer to the IBPA\u2019s Industry Standards Checklist.

As an alternative, use the Vellum program to layout both ebook and print at the same time. The templates are limited, but professional. If you\u2019re doing both digital and print, this may be the best solution. One drawback: it\u2019s only available for Mac. It\u2019s so easy and useful, though, that I\u2019ve know some folks who buy a used Mac just for this purpose.

For picture books, however, I highly recommend Adobe\u2019s Indesign program because it\u2019s the industry standard for creating professionally designed books. It\u2019s a $20.99 monthly subscription (at time of writing) based on single-app subscription rate. (BTW, one seldom known advantage of the Indesign subscription is that you also have access and can use in any project any of the Adobe fonts.)

Fonts are often debated hotly among self-publishers. There is no required font, just what looks pleasing with the illustrations and fits the tone of the book. For children\u2019s books, I recommend at least 14 pt, but it can go much larger, depending on the story\u2019s length and the layout.

These books are not required, but are recommend as references after the course. The first book has exercise files made specifically for the CC2020 software and may not be compatible with older versions of the software. The instructor can provide backwards-compatible files upon request. The second book provides excellent resources for graphic, text, and layout theory for non-designers, and is a very simple read.

NOTICE: You can buy the eBook or physical book of the Non-Designer's Design Book, but either should be the 4th Edition. Online International students may want to purchase the eBook to save time and money on shipping.

Learning how to create an ebook can be overwhelming. Not only do you have to write the content, but you also need to design and format it into a professional-looking document that people will want to download and read.

Your business benefits from publishing an ebook, too. Turning a profit, acquiring new customers, generating buzz, and becoming an industry thought leader are just a few advantages of this type of content.

PDFs are likely the most well-known file type. The "PDF" extension stands for "Portable Document Format," and is best for ebooks that are meant to be read on a computer (digital marketers, you'll want to remember this one). We'll talk more about how to save your ebook as a PDF later in this article.

This file type stands for "Electronic Publication," and is a more flexible ebook format. By that, I mean EPUB ebooks can "reflow" their text to adapt to various mobile devices and tablets, allowing the ebook's text to move on and off different pages based on the device's size on which a user is reading the ebook. They're particularly helpful for viewing on smaller screens, such as smartphones and the Nook from Barnes and Noble.

The MOBI format originated from the Mobipocket Reader software, which was purchased by Amazon in 2005 but was later shut down in 2016. However, the MOBI file extension remains a popular ebook format compatible across the major e-readers (except the Nook).

IBA is the proprietary ebook format for the Apple iBooks Author app. This format does support video, sound, images, and interactive elements, but it is only used for books written in iBooks. It is not compatible with other e-readers.

Ebooks can increase the visibility and credibility of your business while positioning your brand as a thought leader in your industry. However, these ebooks can sometimes be hard to write, even though they offer many benefits.

Remember: The goal of your ebook is to generate leads for your sales team, so pick a topic that will make it easy for a prospect to go from downloading your ebook to having a conversation with your sales team.
